BTS Behind the Scenes: Meet VP of Growth David Nutty

BTS Behind the Scenes is a chance to showcase the people who are making things happen at BTS and give you a “behind the scenes” look into their worlds. In this month’s feature we’ll talk with VP of Growth David Nutty and get into snowboarding, mochas, and small biz agility.

You’ve spent most of your career supporting MPO and other mission-focused organizations. What first drew you to this kind of work—and what continues to drive your passion for it today?

Growing up near Fort Meade, I was always curious about the DoD and the IC. As I learned more about MPO and its mission, I knew I wanted to be a part of it! I am very proud and honored to be a part of the IC and I have had the pleasure of working with some of the smartest people I’ve met in my professional career. Supporting my fellow colleagues and business partners with our customer’s mission is very rewarding and provides great satisfaction to me in my career.

You’ve made a unique transition from program and project management into business development and growth strategy. What lessons from your operational background have been most valuable as you help position BTS for the future?

My program management experience has been very diverse. I’ve been very fortunate to have spent time in various MPO organizations supporting programs including Enterprise IT development, acquisitions support, and the full lifecycle of SIGINT mission systems. I am very excited about bringing my experience to BTS to continue with our heritage of delivering innovative capabilities to meet the mission needs of our customers.

You’ve worked at both large corporations and now at a small business like BTS. What has surprised you most about shifting to a smaller business environment? What motivated you?

I’ve worked for very large corporations as well as very small businesses in the MPO community. What surprises me most is how agile and responsive small business can be to our customer’s mission needs. I am motivated by our culture here at BTS. We have many different people from many different backgrounds with a shared mission of protecting our country and supporting our national defense.

What are you doing when you’re not at work?

I am very active outside of work! You can catch me on the fields watching my daughter play softball and field hockey, catching a game (Ravens and O’s), getting away to our cabin in DCL, torturing myself at my CF box, trying not to roll an ankle on the basketball court, or carving up a new mountain with my snowboarding crew! In addition, my wife and I are very involved in our son’s pursuit of his B.S. in Aviation. I am very proud to say he is well on his way to becoming a career pilot.

Work/life balance is very important to me. Finding time to balance both professional and personal growth is a priority of mine.

We have to ask—what’s behind your Starbucks white chocolate mocha addiction?

I’m not sure when or how the Starbucks addiction started. I have to say my daughter and our pup Turk also feed this addiction which doesn’t help. Let’s just say my daughter has an addiction for a particular dragonfruit drink, and Turk somehow developed an addiction to whipped cream. But that’s a story for another blog.
