BTS Behind the Scenes: Meet Senior Technical Recruiter Sharieca Thompson
BTS Behind the Scenes is a chance to showcase the people who are making things happen at BTS and give you a “behind the scenes” look into their worlds. In this month’s feature we’ll talk with Senior Technical Recruiter Sharieca Thompson and hear about professional transitions, getting the job done, and the joy of giving.
You spent over two decades in the Navy—how did that experience shape the way you approach recruiting today?
The Navy helped me identify, understand, and utilize the strengths that people can bring to the table. Once you take the time to understand individuals and what they can do, it’s a lot easier to build a team around their skills. It’s even easier when you can place people around others to help them learn new skills or improve on their current talents.
What drew you to BTS, and what made you feel like this was the right next step after your Skillbridge experience?
I loved the framework and attitude at BTS. Helping others, commitment to mission and teamwork were big factors for me in the military. I love that BTS has a heavy military background and that they truly care about family. They put their people first.
You’ve got five daughters and still find time for DIY bath bombs, arts and crafts, art, and travelling—what’s your secret to staying energized and creative?
Lots of Red Bulls and 5 Hour Energy drinks…just kidding…or am I? No, honestly, I try to incorporate my kids in my activities. I get such joy from making things for others. I love seeing the happy smiles on faces when I give them a gift that came from the heart. Smiles like that provide me endless energy. And since my kids are a part of me, they love to help me with my crazy ideas and DIY projects.
You mentioned recruiting wasn’t originally on your radar—what surprised you most about it once you really got into it?
You could not have paid me to believe that I would be talking to people on the daily. I am naturally an introvert. But through the military, I have had to step out of my comfort box to do the job. Most of my Sailors would describe me as a nurturer. I always wanted the best for them…even the tough ones. I would tell sailors, “I can do two things for you: I can help you succeed in your career or help you leave this career, what do you want to do?”
And even for those that decided to leave, I would still help. I would ensure they were prepared for both options. I would ask if they had a plan, give them scenarios, and provide them resources I had come across. I want people to be successful in the things they do. Now thinking about it, that philosophy or approach is not much different than how I recruit. I have the same mindset. I want every candidate to succeed and for those I can’t help, I provide resources that can help them better themselves and hopefully get the job they want.
You describe yourself as an introvert who thrives in teaching and leadership roles—what advice would you give to other introverts thinking about pivoting careers or stepping into new spaces?
I would say being uncomfortable is only temporary. Don’t be ashamed to take extra measures to prepare yourself for something that is challenging. Only you know how you will react if caught off guard. For me, I worked better if I was prepared, which meant I had to study more, go over things…a lot. Every challenge that you overcome just makes you stronger and it does get easier over time. I tell people I am an introvert and most don’t believe me. But that’s because I kept challenging myself by being uncomfortable. Every win makes you stronger.
